Roger Smith is such a bland, boring name compared to what some children grow up with, and yet that was the name his parents came up with when he was born. Thus, in 1972, Roger Smith was born into the world, in room 418A of London Bridge Hospital. He was the only child of Alexander Smith and Julia Meave, two newly-weds who were very much in love.

Roger grew up and spent most of his life in London. He was raised in quite the loving family environment, and his first few years of school took place in public academies, though when he turned thirteen he was enrolled into Harrow School, one of London’s leading private schools. By age eighteen, he could speak Latin, Greek, English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Chinese (as these languages are all part of the curriculum in Harrow), and was quite knowledgeable in chemistry and physics. He was also a member of the drama society, appearing in numerous productions over the five years he was at Harrow. Roger graduated near the top of his class, in the number seven spot, and decided to move on to Camridge, which accepted him quite easily.

His college life in Cambridge wasn’t far from his student life in Harrow, as he made sure to quickly join the Amateur Dramatic club, then moved on into his studies in the arts and humanities. He spent six years at Cambridge, learning to better himself with the languages he knew, and delving deeper into the human psyche with social sciences classes. At the age of 24 he left Cambridge with little left to worry about save for the tab of money he owed the schools (as most of his schooling was paid via scholarship, there were expenses they did not cover, and thus he was forced to take loans.)

Fresh out of Cambridge with his knowledge, he went looking for a job he could put his knowledge into. As luck would have it, he went and applied for a government position, and was picked out of a group of forty for “alternate testing.” With his background with languages, psychology and chemistry, he was given the testing by the Secret Intelligence Service, and actually got a job working for MI6. At first he was merely a translator for the agents in the field, working behind a desk, he was given his first field assignment last year.

As a field translator he had to learn to use items such as wireless microphones, working in less than normal conditions, and being able to fire a handgun with accuracy. These weren’t easy tasks for Roger to get used to, and his first mission went horribly wrong. With his cover blown, Roger was almost shot to death, but just before the bullet would have hit him, he threw up his hands out of reflex and let out a scream – yet the bullet never touched him. Instead, when Roger opened his eyes again, the bullet was frozen in front of him, suspended in air. This was the first time that Roger’s powers had manifested, and he considered it just pure luck, and perhaps an absolute rush of adrenalin that saved his life.

Since that failed assignment, Roger has been doing field work in small groups of agents, typically as their translator. He has yet to have another experience with time manipulation, but that’s because he doesn’t know how to tap into his powers just yet. He has recently been given an assignment in Rio to track down the leader of a rather large drug smuggling cartel, which MI6 believes may be supporting world terrorism.

Roger is, for all purposes, the exact opposite of James Bond in terms of MI6 Agents. He’s level headed, calm, and tends to draw his gun last instead of first. He gets by on intelligence and wits, though he does enjoy getting to play with Q’s gadgets from time to time (and yes, there is a Q in MI6; an official interview with two MI6 agents on the BBC acknowledged this)

He’s a good card player – poker, blackjack and euchre are his favorites – but when it gets to other table games he’s not so hot. He’s gotten cleaned out a few times while playing roulette, and due to that he no longer tends to attempt playing. Even with his skill in playing cards, he’d rather avoid a casino unless his mission calls for it – he’s still working on paying back the Cambridge loan, and doesn’t want to go broke in the process.

He’s got a thing for classic cards, and drives an Aston Martin DB5 – something that he gets mocked about at MI6, considering it’s known to be the “classic Bond car.” He’s also a “professional model builder,” leaving his apartment in London to look like a scene out of some sort of diorama. He has hundreds, if not thousands of model boats, figures, cars, trees, etc lining his apartment, all in different poses – his favorite, however, is a diorama he made of the Battle of Cape Matapan, including the sinking of an Italian destroyer.

Roger suffers from tapephobia, the fear of being placed in a grave while still alive, as well as agoraphobia, which is the fear of being placed in a situation where there is no escape. Agoraphobia tends to kick in more often during his missions, which can lead to a rush of adrenalin causing him to shake, and making his ability to aim a weapon lower. He also unknowingly suffers from bathophobia (fear of depths), caused by nearly drowning in a swimming pool as a child.

With his training in psychology, he’s quite good at talking his way out of things, but when it comes to shooting his way out of a situation he’s not so good. True, he did pass the marksman testing given by MI6, though that was purely out of luck – he’s a lousy shot most of the time, unless he really focuses on the task. He does spend time more often than not at the rifle range, working on his marksmanship, but it’s nowhere near as good as he’d like it to be. Within fifty yards he could incapacitate a target, but outside of that he’d be lucky to do little more than catch a shoulder shot – while aiming at the head.
